Destination Petrozavodsk

Not enough money for Irkutsk, so this winter:
dog-sledding for the aged, in Karelia.

I'll wait and see...

This day 52 weeks ago, our journey began...

On sunday february 10th 2014, our adventure began with a flight from Dusseldorf to Moscow.
So we found an appropriate setting near the river waal to re- live one of the nice things we did during our baikal expedition, lunch break on the shore after some walking.
And I know, today we walked through fields instead of on ice, it was not freezing, there was wildlife visible and we did not use a campfire but a small stove, but that's not the point, it was fun!

Ольхон

5 Stars on Flickr for this landscape...
I think they are right, enjoyed it very much,
(and the picture isn't too bad either).

Walking on ice

I just saw that we still haven't posted "real" Baikal-pictures.
So here are (shot by Jeroen):
the slippery ice;
Valera, our great guide & cook;
the old man and the sea.

Первый лёд !

Ja hoor: een WINTERochtend! En als ik zit te ontbijten, speklapje en chocomel, houdt een roodborstje me gezelschap. In de verte zitten, nog steeds, die twee sneeuwganzen te overwinteren. Zij hier, wij straks daar.

Mountaineering

Well.... sort of.

Uittesten hoe J's sneeuwschoenen en E's conditie het doen (in de modder - want sneeuw en ijs zijn ver te zoeken). Aan beide mag nog wat gesleuteld worden...

Русские птицы (7) Гуменник

Guests from Russia, probably.
 Tundra or Taiga Bean Geese, Гуменник, but there is still
some discussion about the "tundra" part. These two came
 with a group of young White-fronted Geese, Белолобый Гусь (bottom)
 making their "grand tour" for the first time. Wèlcome!

Байкальские птицы (6)

I was rather surprised to see this very lonely Sandpiper in Crow Creek. Just stood there, while the geese, curlews and others anxiously looked on from far. Later she told me her foot was stuck in the mud! I know the feeling...

I still think it's a miracle they can fly!
We Dutch call them blue btw...

Of course these Godwits are neither азиатские nor сибирские;
they are just real Dutch Grutto's, in Lienden (Batenburg) NL
But they are family.

Байкальские птицы (1)

Алсу Ильдаровна Buiting, our friendly teacher, knows that I love birds and she lent me these cards with Baikal Birds. Some of them very exotic, but others also "available" in my neighbourhood! So I hàve to show them here, and who could be better to start with than the famous writer: Gogol ("the Revisor").
We call them Brilduiker, Goldeneye, Schellente.
The author we call Gogol... ;)

Guests from Russia: Белолобый гусь

Я не знаю точно как их зовут по-Русски, Белолобый гусь?
Many of the Russian white-fronted geese spend the winter in the Netherlands. Only ± 1000 pairs breed in Holland.
