Зимние Олимпийские игры 2014

The 2014 Winter Olympics is a major international multi-sport event scheduled to be celebrated from 7 to 23 February 2014. This probably means transportation will be more expensive around that time frame! (Moscow, not Irkutsk) unless most people to the olympics are able to travel directly to Sochi. I have not found any accurate info on that though....
Another thing to investigate!

Русская музыка

While testing my new balaklava (ooooh, thàt's easy on the ears, so comfortable) I keep humming:  Vodjenka stúúúdena jako led jako led... yes I know it's not Russian, but I sang that on my conservatoire-exam, "Westslawische Volkslieder".
And that famous "Wolgalied" also is not Russian, but I do like the style very much.

I promise: next time real Russian Music!

Distagon 40mm

The Hasselblad handles well with gloves on. One small problem with handling the darkslide, but that can be easily resolved. Tie something to it so that you can grab it with gloves on.
The 40mm Distagon had the same problem as it had back in the States, sticking apertureblades. So this lens needs some tender love and care.
But Erwin is right, it is bulky and perhaps a bit limited for landscape photography.
On the other hand, I really love wide angle. Luckily we have ample time to decide which lenses we will carry.

Testing Cameras (4)

(Too) nice weather: -5° and sunny. Three cameras in the cold: my 1955 Smena (photo above), the tiny 1980 Kiev-30, and left: Jeroen, with the big Hasselblad + 40mm.
What stands out today, for me: the Kiev is easy to handle ànd to keep warm in my pocket. Not the greatest "quality" because only old film is available now. ( 1992 Svema 64, see analoog60 blog and/or flickr photostream erwinruys)

Siberian Horizon

It's in the news: -20° this night, but it doesn't feel cold, this morning. Perfect to test the next "cold camera", the Horizon 202.
Well, easy to handle without gloves, a bit bulky for my pocket, the spring-motor works fine - no signs of banding.
But - I didn't expect this - very wide-angle (of course). Maybe normal 28 mm. is better in the wild nature, so a HB 40mm Distagon test is important! Do we really need that big lump?

Progress...

I'm not sure I'll really need the word червяками in Siberia, but here is where I am now. Hopefully, in a few months, maybe some Tolstoy?

Why Tolstoy? Because he once said to depressed Rachmaninow: "Do you really think people need that kind of music?" Honest man!

холодный фотоаппарат (2)

Bright sun, wind from Russia and -8°; the right weather to test the 1955 Смена.
"Stalin's Volkswagen" as she was called: a good, simple camera for the people. I like her very much, she is beautiful and has possibilities.
The counter works like the Argus brick, better, in fact, the shutter is more Lubitel-like.
But: the (too tiny) diaphragm is inoperable in the freezing cold, alas.

(Ha - as if I ever touch a diaphragm! I take every picture 1/50 at F8, Смена, Фед, or Hasselblad...)

старая фотоплёнка

In the ± 1955 Смена that I received today was an old film waiting to be developed. Looks very nice to me, palms and stuff, does anyone know?

Because of the Ukrainian interest I added some more from this old фотоплiвка.
